WASHINGTON, DC (July 10, 2018) – Today, Earthjustice’s Vice President of Policy and Legislation, Martin Hayden, released the following statement after the Council on Environmental Quality announced a public comment period extension on their review of the National Environmental Policy Act.
“Extending the public comment period on the Trump administration’s proposal to roll back the National Environmental Policy Act will give people more time to speak up and speak out against this dangerous proposal. Although this move could give people more time to raise their voice on this dangerous proposal, it could be all smoke and mirrors.
“This proposal is among the most flagrant assault on local authority we’ve seen from this administration. What they are proposing with this rule change is a gag order on local officials and community members – keeping them from participating in decisions that impact their neighborhoods. NEPA was designed to give local communities a voice in how and where infrastructure and other projects are built. The Trump administration is proposing giving communities a laryngectomy.”
