Our Issues
The Protect NEPA campaign works with a coalition of over twenty of the country’s largest environmental and civil rights advocacy groups – including Sierra Club, Defenders of Wildlife, Natural Resources Defense Council, and League of Conservation Voters – to advance and defend NEPA across a broad range of key issue areas.
Addressing climate change is our generation’s greatest challenge. The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) is a critical tool in this fight to transition our economy away from dirty fossil fuels towards clean, renewable energy sources. NEPA requires federal agencies to quantify the project’s projected carbon footprint, even if those emissions would be released far from the boundaries of the project in question.
Low-income and minority communities are disproportionately exposed to pollution and toxins on the job, at school, and in their homes. NEPA protects these communities by requiring the government to disclose any significant environmental and public health impacts a project may have before construction begins.
The health and safety of our communities are non-negotiable. Environmental reviews ensure that the air we breathe and the water we drink remain clean and free of harmful pollutants.
For almost 50 years, the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) has empowered laborers and minority communities across the United States to demand better workplace safety. NEPA ensures that our infrastructure is built to last with the health and safety of our workers and local communities in mind.
Before an oil or gas company can conduct exploration or begin production activities, the NEPA process ensures completion of a rigorous environmental review that incorporates the concerns of local communities.
Public lands are our unique inheritance and it’s essential that the federal government listen to the public when managing these public resources. Without NEPA, Americans would lose their ability to speak up and voice concerns about unsafe and haphazard land management practices.
As sea levels continue to rise and extreme weather events become more frequent, roads, bridges and other infrastructure projects must be engineered to be more resilient to the increasingly severe effects of climate change. NEPA ensures that our energy and transportation infrastructure is built to last with the benefit of local communities in mind.
Smarter planning leads to healthier forests. By demanding that our government make decisions based on the best available information, NEPA ensures that forest management remains the product of a science-based decision-making.
